Position Overview
The Red Horizon is seeking to expand its contributor network across Europe. We are looking for freelance journalists, field reporters, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) researchers to work on a piece-by-piece, project-based basis. Each assignment involves delivering focused, in-depth research, analysis, or fieldwork on specific topics or developments.
This is not a full-time or fixed-hours position. Contributors are assigned individual tasks or research topics as needed, based on regional developments and editorial priorities. The scope of each assignment is clearly defined in advance — and payment is determined individually, based on the complexity and scale of the specific work.
This role is ideal for individuals who excel in critical analysis and evidence-based reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and report on political, economic, or policy developments in specific European countries
- Conduct in-depth desk research, field observations, interviews, or open-source investigations, depending on the assignment
- Provide timely analytical reports supported by reliable sources and clear argumentation
- Identify emerging issues, local trends, or overlooked developments worthy of international attention
- Collaborate with The Red Horizon’s editorial team to shape the scope and structure of research outputs
- Ensure all submitted material meets high standards of accuracy, relevance, and originality
In Addition to Published Work
We believe that strong journalism is built not only on what is published, but also on the unseen work behind it.
The Red Horizon places high value on background research and preparatory analysis — not just for specific reports, but also to deepen our editorial understanding, strengthen topic selection, and guide future assignments.
Contributors may be invited to conduct non-published, background-focused research aimed at improving the depth and strategic direction of our editorial coverage. These assignments are equally compensated on a per-project basis.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in journalism, research, reporting, political analysis, or OSINT work
- Strong knowledge of the region or subject matter you’re focusing on
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and deliver concise, well-documented work
- Excellent writing skills in English; proficiency in additional European languages is a significant advantage
- Familiarity with field reporting methods or OSINT tools and verification techniques is a plus
- A commitment to independent, critical journalism that challenges dominant narratives
- Furthermore, we also welcome young, energetic, and self-confident individuals who are closely interested in political, policy, and current developments in their country — and who believe they can successfully work on assigned topics, even without prior professional experience.
Compensation & Work Model
- This is a piece-based, project-based role. Work is assigned by topic or task, and there are no fixed working hours.
- Payment is determined individually for each assignment, depending on its scope, depth, urgency, and required expertise.
- Contributors are contacted as needed, based on geographic or thematic relevance.
Application Process
Please send us:
- A brief introduction outlining your background and areas of expertise
- CV or professional profile (with links to previous work if available)
- Languages spoken and countries you have experience covering
- Any specific themes, issues, or regions you’re most interested in working on
- We welcome applications on a rolling basis and assign projects as needed across different countries and subjects.
